Me to me: You know, this chapter would go quicker if stuff actually happened and you stopped waxing poetic about nature like some Romantic.

me: But… nature is pretty.

Me: There’s a plot that needs to happen you know.

me: Do *you* know how to get that plot to happen without exposing all the good stuff right away? I thought we were supposed to build mystery and atmosphere at the same time?

Me: …. so sunsets are pretty.

Writing AUs are hard, but especially when you’re writing characters who are assholes even if you genuinely like them. It gets much harder when you don’t write from their PoV.

It’s easy to write nice, likable characters. It’s a lot harder to figure out what’s being an asshole because they’re kind of a dick sometimes and being an asshole because social conventions are hard and this character is super awkward. And all of that gets a lot harder when you’re trying to keep it believable for your audience so they recognize this character even though it’s a completely different world and they don’t decide you’ve interpreted the character wrong. (Or worse, that you secretly hate this character you actually want to nuzzle.)

All this to say – is Ben in B&T the kind of asshole who would correct improper word use? Like if someone says “you’re jealous” would he be the kind of dick to explain that no, he’s envious, not jealous? I feel like he might be but also that’s pedantic as all hell and I don’t think he’s pedantic. So I’m undecided.

Writing is hard.

Opinions are welcome btw. If anyone cares
