🥀

Since you mentioned liking Revenge of the Sith it got me thinking about how I’d rate the Star Wars films, so that’s what I decided to do.

In order from least favorite to favorite:
10. The Phantom Menace
Outside of Duel of the Fates I always forget what the hell happens in this movie. I don’t hate it, it just bores me. Kid Anakin is fine though and Jake Lloyd deserved better. (I have seen waaaaay worse kid actors. This little guy was fine, Star Wars fans are just assholes.)
9. Rogue One
Also kinda boring. After Scarif everything really picks up and I like the movie a whole hell of a lot but before that it just kinda drags for me. I don’t feel like I know any of the characters really well and that’s an issue for me. Jyn is closed off (for good reason) but I guess I wish I would’ve been able to get to know her as a character. There wasn’t really time for that, I know, but it would’ve helped. But it also has Tarkin in it, so I guess that’s a point in it’s favor.
8. Attack of the Clones
Attack of the Clones has some of my favorite Star Wars things (Across the Stars, Anakin’s slaughter of the Tuskin Raiders, Anakin being totally torn up about said slaughter, Count Dooku, ect) but it’s still a giant fucking mess. There’s a lot I love about it, but it’s just not super great.
7. Solo
Again, Solo is fine, but it’s not better than the others in my opinion. Alden Ehrenreich did well and I believe him as a young Han. I liked it but there are other ones I like more.
6. The Force Awakens
I like TFA but the issue I have with it is that it takes too damn long to get to the story, imo. Once we’re on Takondona I’m sold but up until then it kind of crawls. It’s an issue I have with TLJ, too, but it bugs me more in TFA because there’s less going on. It’s still got one of my favorite scenes, though, which is Han’s death.
5. A New Hope
I feel weird about not complaining about how long ANH takes to get started when I just did the same thing for TFA but it feels like it works better in ANH. I find young Luke really super charming and sincere so he’s a fun character to follow as the story goes on. It’s honestly just a charming movie.
4. The Empire Strikes Back
I like Empire a lot, just like 90% of all people who’ve seen it. There’s a lot to really love about it, imo. I think I like Lando the best, though, and I totally get why he did what he did. It’s not just the twist that solidifies this movie as a cultural landmark, imo, it’s just that it’s that good.
3. The Last Jedi
This one bounces back and forth between #3 and #1, honestly. I love the film despite some things I would change (it draaaaags in parts). I love that it finally addresses the failings of the old Jedi worldview, which has always been an issue for me ever since I saw the PT as a kid, I love Rose being smart and compassionate and angry (and all of these things compliment each other because they’re kept in balance and drive her character) and that she’s not *just* a love interest but also a great character. Seeing Rey more vulnerable really made her character click for me and I liked her a lot better after this film. I mean, I could go on but there’s a lot in it that just makes me very happy.
2. Revenge of the Sith
This movie. This freaking movie. Like, it’s not a secret that I love some tortured tragic characters but my heart really breaks for Anakin. He’s finally at his lowest, he screws it all up, and everyone has to pay the consequences. It’s so damn Greek. Outside of that, I love Palpatine finally revealing himself and playing everyone like a fiddle. I love the final goodbye between Anakin and Obi-Wan (pre-Vader) where they don’t know it’s goodbye but we do and it hurts. I love the fight on Mustafar (Anakin in black, Obi in white, circling each other like yin and yang in conflict). Maybe part of the reason I love it so much is because of The Clone Wars cartoons, because it really does show what kind of person Anakin was and what he could’ve been. It hurts. It hurts so good.
1. Return of the Jedi
In a weird twist this was actually the first Star Wars movie I ever saw so it gets nostalgia points. I’m still a little afraid of the Ewoks but what makes this movie for me is Luke and Vader. It just does. I love a good redemption story, and I love that Luke’s faith and hope that his father could still choose to do the right thing was rewarded, rather than being punished. This is Luke at his best, when he chooses not to meet violence with violence, but love. That’s just !!! And what other male character – what other male hero – employs a tactic like that? That’s incredibly unexpected and it’s one of my biggest pet peeves that instead of looking at Luke and seeing a character who chooses to lay his head on the chopping block to give someone else a choice he becomes this bad ass lightsaber swinging hero who pulls ships out of the sky. Luke’s power isn’t in destruction; it’s in renewal. (Also I feel like there’s a meta commentary on this very thing with Luke’s arc in The Last Jedi.)

Okay, so that was a bit of a rant but it’s important to be, I guess. Other things I love about RotJ are Leia strangling Jabba, Han being an idiot about Leia’s feelings, Lando leading the run on the Death Star, and Anakin’s funeral.

Sen me a flower, I’ll tell you whatever I want.

unforth-ninawaters replied to your post “So just because I’m curious…
How many of the folks who follow me…”

I’ve read basically no fanfic in over a year. So. Not me. And I wont read Reylo but I might eventually read some other Star Ward pairings…

Okay but in that over a year time you made and then brought a tiny person into the world. Way more impressive than fanfic imo.

In terms of Star Wars fic, unless it’s short, I dunno how much I’m going play with other ships. I do have that Cinderella FinnPoe one I still actually want to do, and the Finnreylo fic that’s coming out in December (which probably isn’t up your alley tbh) but other than that I’m actually having a lot of trouble coming up with conflicts and stories for various ships. I have some vague ideas in my notebook but having the motivation to make them happen is another story.

But still, I won’t have an issue with you not reading them at all if that’s what you choose.

FinnRose! (Also I apparently can’t comment on your posts any longer?)

who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunter
Finn is the werewolf who’s just trying to live a peaceful life and Rose is the scrappy little hunter.
who’s the mermaid and who’s the fisherman
Finn is a fisherman who hates fishing and wishes he could do anything else. Rose is a curious mermaid who’s always been in the weird two-legged creatures that visit her lagoon.
who’s the witch and who’s the familiar
Finn is a green witch and Rose is his familiar.
who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addict
Finn is the chipper barista and Rose is only addicted to coffee because she’s been working late nights to finish her masters in PoliSci.
who’s the professor and who’s the TA
Rose is the professor and Finn is not her TA, he’s the TA of one of her colleges who teaches military history. They have lunch and she gives Finn a crash course in economics (which he eventually ends up studying on his own to try to impress and keep up with her. Little does he know she’s already very taken with him).
who’s the knight and who’s the prince(ss)
Finn is a knight, charged with guarding Princess Rose. Little does he know the squire he’s been training with is actually the Princess in disguise.
who’s the teacher and who’s the single parent
Finn is a single dad who hasn’t been on a date since his son was born. Rose hasn’t been on a date since…. well she’s lost track. Perhaps their discussions of whether or not Finn’s son, Michael, needs specialized tutoring could lead to something more??
who’s the writer and who’s the editor
Finn’s a writer struggling to get a handle on the craft and Rose is a no-nonsense editor who bleeds pages with her trust red pen. Finn’s convinced she has it out for him, but really Rose thinks he’s got amazing potential.

Also, I don’t know why you can’t reply to my posts. I checked but I have it on. Is anyone else having that issue?

unforth-ninawaters replied to your post “If getting into a fandom with much, much more drama has taught me…”

honestly even at the time I thought it was so insanely juvenile and…obvious…

..this is me realizing we’re not even talking about the same incidence of this in the SPN fandom, that it’s happened more than once, and it is STILL insanely juvenile and obvious.

This has happened more than once? Good grief. Very juvenile.

@unforth-ninawaters

I’m not really into marvel but I kinda figured it’d be the kind of crap they’d churn out. Antis are pretty much all the same no matter what ship, some are just more violent and willing to threaten and/or do illegal crap than others. Their arguments are tired and so am I.

I’ve been trying to avoid it but honestly it gets sooo hard. I’m not sure what your wife read but recently we had a bout of tag spamming that also included a big fat dollop of racism. It’s like there’s always something in this fandom and I’m just tired of it. I’m not saying this ship is perfect or anything but it sure as shit isn’t so evil it’s worth accusing people of very serious crap over. It’s apparently too difficult to just be like “I dont like this ship for X reasons” without taking it to extremes. How anyone falls for this crap I will never understand.

So yeah, it was mostly me venting/mocking antis.

Oh oh why is Stucky evil I wanna knooooow

Forgive me, it’s been a long time since I watched the Cap movies. Also some of these sentences made me gag.

Stucky is Totes Evul because….

  • Bucky tried to kill Steve and Steve’s friends and, brainwashing aside, he shouldn’t do that. Also being a bad guy against your will doesn’t excuse the fact that you were a bad guy and should pay for it. (Sorry, I just threw up in my mouth a little.)
  • Power imbalance because Bucky is disabled and Steve is a super human with all his limbs and we all know able-bodied partners have more power in a relationship than disabled partners.
  • Codependency, I guess.
  • They’re brothers-in-arms and therefore like family so shipping them is incest, apparently.
  • They’re like hero/sidekick so that’s like boss/employee which is terrible and gross.
  • Bucky was Steve’s friend/idol when they were kids and teen!Steve looked up to him so therefore their relationship has to be gross because no one ever looks up to their partners (especially when they’re young and experiencing crushes and stuff for the first time).

Eeeevul rating: 1942/10

Send me a ship and I’ll be facetious as hell about why it’s totes evul!

@unforth-ninawaters

Oh these people are everywhere on this site. In trying to keep myself abreast of fandom drama so I know who to stay away from I’ve been exposed to so much “”“"discourse”“”“ that really just amounts to good old fashioned transphobia, biphobia (no acknowledgement that pan folks exist), acephobia, whorephobia… like you name it, it’s there.

The really insidious thing is that a lot of these folks post stuff that’s pretty relatable. A story about a woman who was mansplained to, followed by complaining about men. Gender essentialism disguised as body positivity. Shitposts unrelated to their hideous politics. You won’t know it unless you pick up on their dog whistles or check their blogs where they do boast about being radfems, or "cis/trans women” . It’s hideous.

@unforth-ninawaters

Mmmhmmm. Or even Harry, Ron, and Hermione in different houses. That honestly would’ve made sense, too. Like, idk, one way to really make me worry Harry might have more in common with Voldemort than he wants or actually give him a challenge could be to either make him a Slytherin or give him Slytherin friends.

Idk I have a lot of thoughts about how backloaded everything is. Perhaps it was because the older Harry got the more he was supposed to realize not everything was black and white, but a lot of it feels like she suddenly realized she had made everything black and white and needed to fix that. All that nuance that could’ve been was lost because the good guys were good and the bad guys were bad until suddenly it needed to not be that way.

Idk. I have a lot of rambly thoughts about how things could’ve been done. I was never into HP that much, so idk if reading it as a kid and growing up with the books changes things but it probably does. It’s probably enough for 14 year olds but not me.
