I’ve been rubber necking your Last Jedi conversations and its got me thinking – the divide between people I know who are starting to feel the Reylo love and those who don’t seems to be entirely whether or not they think Adam Driver is hot. Like for me personally? Soooooo not my type…and I *definitely* do not ship it (though I’ll own especially early in the movie I really “saw it” as I hadn’t before…but still didn’t ship it…but folks who find him attractive seem way more drawn by it…

(And obvs no judgement ship and let ship I just thought it was interesting…)

That’s fair. I mean, it’s harder to ship things if ypu don’t find the people involved attractive at all, right?

But I must confess that it’s not the only thing I ship either. I like stormpilot and finnrose and finnpoerose (whatever that’s called lol) and finnrey, too.

I don’t know if I’ve said it publicly on my blog but for me, a lot of shipping comes down to the core feeling a ship has for me. Each ship has something unique about it that interests me. Reylo is no different. Sure, Daisy is gorgeous and Adam is hot but it’s not just looks.

And I would totally be up for discussing why I like it and why it appeals to me personally but I won’t wax poetic all over your post if you don’t want me to.

But yeah, attraction to actors is probably a factor for a fair number of people. I will say that I think the divide has more to do with whether or not people like Ben Solo/Kylo Ren w/in the SW fandom. But I’ve only been lurking for the past few months and I don’t have nearly enough information on that front. Perhaps it’s a bit of both?

I should have been clearer – I think there is enough in canon to support the ship (even if the purely canon version of it is, imo, quite abusive) and I think the primary divide Ive personally over whether people go for it anyway is if they find Driver attractive. I realise my original post implies some sort of whiny “people only ship this cause the actor is hot!” And I’m sorry cause that wasn’t what I meant and I definitely didn’t mean to hurt feelings, it’s my fault for not further clarifying my meaning.

(As a further clarification – a ship’s canon interpretation being abusive isn’t a be all and end all, I think Dean is sometimes abusive toward Cas in canon and that doesn’t stop me shipping them like woah)

Oh no, I understand that you were just making an observation. And it’s not an observation without merit. I mean, when Driver took off the helmet in TFA the first thing out of my mouth was “oh no, he’s hot”. It’s definitely a factor.

Are there problems with the ship in canon? Yeah, totally. There are some icky things there. Kylo is the villain. I know it, he knows it, everyone knows it. He does villainous things.

My biggest problem with the whole “reylo is abusive” line is quite honestly that it’s used as a battering ram. It’s not a relationship I think anyone would strive for in real life. But no ship is perfect. As you said, Dean can be abusive towards Cas and I still ship that. Most SPN ships have serious issues and that still isn’t gonna stop me. Hell, I could write the most wholesome ship has violently abusive if I wanted to. It depends on the writer and the shipper and what they’re getting needing at any moment. And I don’t mean to imply you’re doing that. You’re not at all. I understand you’re just pointing out something you noticed.

And quite frankly it’s a bit of a sore spot for me. I get frustrated easily and a lot of the discussions I see passed around without a lot of reflection on why a person might ship reylo or like kylo feel… dismissive at best and outright mean at worst. I don’t mean to imply we can’t discuss the issues the ships or characters or canon havd either. I just wish it a more open discussion.

But I understand that wasn’t your intent so no harm done. And I also apologize for being a little defensive in this post and my previous reply.

Ooh, I feel the same way about Kylo! The movie really clicked into place for me when they teamed up and I was SUPER excited. He understands Ray and I love that (but not enough, clearly).

I wonder whether Ray needs to accept and love her darker feelings (anger, betrayal). I have a theory that the vision in the cave meant that she needs to stop looking for other people to fill the hole in her heart (the longing for her parents to have loved her and not abandoned her) and instead to kind of… Be her own parent and love herself. You know? Cause she was looking for her parents down there and she saw herself instead. So I think she’s the answer. But she doesn’t realize that yet. She keeps looking for a parent in Han, and Luke, and she even wanted connection with Kylo to kind of fill that? But once she loves herself she’ll be able to love other people without wanting them to fill that particular hole for her.

That’s my theory!

I don’t know what to think about my love for Ben Solo. I understand his sense of betrayal and his anger and in another movie where I didn’t love his parents so much I’d kinda want her to just burn the world down with him. But he’s a definite example of someone who approaches every problem as a battle and always tries to win and believes his vulnerability is weakness. Which is textbook toxic masculinity. He’s a fascist because his response to his pain is the toxic masculine response. And this movie was very against that, and into surviving instead of winning, which is a very feminist perspective on life. Like even the “good” male characters kept doing things wrong because they had that need to WIN. (Poe and Finn).

Anyway. The angry parts of me loves Ben Solo to bits! And I kind of want Ray to get to have some of that struggle with darkness and decide it’s not something to reject or give in to but rather something to have compassion for?

I really like your Rey theory! And I tend to agree! Personally, I think this trilogy is about a couple of things and one of those might be finding inner balance. Like, the whole idea of balancing the force has been external for the majority of the films but I personally think the way to achieve that balance is with each force user accepting their own darkness and light and using each as they need to. I think Rey is the key to achieving that and I’d really like to see her embrace the power of creation and destruction. She needs to accept that she’s whole on her own before she can really change things, and I think that’s possible. But those are  just my feelings on it. 

As far as Ben goes, while I understand the argument about toxic masculinity I don’t know if I share that interpretation. I personally think there’s a lot more going on in his head than *just* the idea of toxic masculinity. I mean, for this guy, vulnerability is a bit of a weakness. He puts his trust in his Uncle and he thought the man tried to kill him. Snoke goes from “you’re a failure and nothing more than a child” to “you’re wonderful and my greatest pupil now do me proud” pretty quickly. I don’t think it’s 100% off base to say that his experiences color the way he does things. And yeah, the violent outbursts are an issue. I don’t think that’s up for debate at all. Still doesn’t change the fact that I like the character. BUT by the same token, I don’t see it as a bad thing if he were to conquer these destructive tendencies (both self-destructive and destructive towards others). That’s kind of a good thing, right? 

But also, you’re right! What’s interesting about this movie is that it took the “win, win, win!” thing and put a new spin on it. Winning is nice and all, but sometimes you need to make smart decisions so you can fight another day. And I think what Rose said was important, too. It’s not about killing what you hate, it’s about saving what you love. I liked that spin on it.  

Sorry, my mind is kinda running at full speed right now (woo anxiety!) so I might not be making all the connections I need to to be understood so I’m gonna stop typing while I’m ahead.

Oh man he’s got EPIC sad eyes. He’s so lonely, and he thinks she can be his partner. She’s not lonely, but she’s got a big heart and would pull him right on over to the light side and plunk him down with all her new friends if he’d let her.

Dammit, I ship it a lot.

Also, Adam Driver’s voice does /things/ to me.

Ugh. Right? He wants to be loved. I wants to stop hurting. If he’d let her she’d totally be able to help him with that and he’d get new friends and a good and just purpose to fight for. Gah! I just want give him a hard shove in her direction and be like “you numpty, you’re gonna join her side! be good! what you’re looking for is inside you and with her, asshole! She believes in you, so don’t let her down!” 

Yeah, I have a problem lol. 

Also yes, Adam Driver’s voice and his hair and his face and wherever the hell all that muscle came from do *things* to me as well. 

But then what would become of the Poe, Finn, Rose, Ray foursome? 😜

I loved the Raylo connection, big time, but the only thing that really works as a resolution for him in my mind, is for Leia to kill him. Goodness knows she needs some good therapeutic revenge.

Yeah…. strong disagree there. 

I don’t see Leia being the kind of person to kill her own kid for any reason. In Star Wars, as in life, revenge doesn’t do that much good. 

I am a big fan of poe/finn/rose/rey though. That can still happen! Open poly for everyone!

I’ll confess I kinda crackshipped it a little but then I saw The Last Jedi and I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole.
Really though, I can’t be to blame here. It’s enemies to lovers and everyone knows how weak I am for that! And that kicked puppy look he got when he was *begging her* to join him. I was pretty much doomed.

I’m doing this on mobile, so to my followers, spoilers ahead for The Last Jedi. 🙂

I agree with a lot of what you said. Visually, the film was stunning to look at. Like you said, the cinematography was amazing.

I was so conflicted on Holdo at the start (which I think was the point – she’s working against our “hero”). I think it was very humbling for Poe, who had been selected in the previous film to carry out this Very Important Mission and this film, he had to learn his place, and what it’s like to be a cog in a machine. I enjoyed how they worked that for him.

I agree with everything you said about Luke and the Jedi vs Sith. It was so hard to see him fight himself and admit failure, but I loved the way they did it (it wasn’t very surprising to me as there were similar story lines in what’s now called the Legends series as well).

I enjoyed how our three “mains” we’re separated, had their own missions and stories, but were still given the same amount of attention, as well as how they wove together. I was also meh on the Rose/Finn thing, but I did like how they worked together and brought each other back to reality when it was needed.

For Rey, the scenes where they wanted us to “hang” as far as her decisions, I felt enough to be believable, but I didn’t see any expansion about her darkness/conflict like we did with Anakin, Luke, and Kylo/Ben (even though they say it’s there). I also enjoyed the fight between her and Luke, mainly because its such a departure from your typical “good vs bad” fights with two people of “good” fighting due to their own beliefs.

The two main non-space battle fight scenes (Rey and Ben and Luke and Ben) were so fucking amazing. And the former also falls into that not-good-vs-bad grey area that I like.

Obviously, I thought the Porgs and BB-8 were adorable lol. Overall, I did not have very many complaints about this movie. 😀

OMG yes! I forgot to mention the fight between Rey and Luke! That was awesome and I adored it. Definitely fun to see more fights that weren’t so black and white and the scene with Luke and Rey was a great example of that. (Also I love how pissed she got. She does not like to be lied to lol.) 

I almost think it isn’t really about her darkness but more about her willingness to go places the others deem inappropriate. Like when Luke freaked out I kinda didn’t get it because how was she supposed to know looking in that cave was verboten? It didn’t seem like that big of a deal to me. But maybe that’s the point? Rey is willing to use the “darkness” and things that are on the darkside (anger , destruction, ect) if it’s helpful. Maybe. IDK if that’s what it was supposed to be but I’d like it if it was. They’ll probably explore that more in the next movie. Maybe.

And that’s a good point about the audience hanging on her decisions. Obviously they can’t make her decide right away because they’ve still got another movie to do and there has to be some mystery. 

And yes, BB-8 and the porgs were adorable. I kinda want one now lol.

I am absolutely on board with loving Ben Solo. I think the fact that I love him so hard makes him an even better villain. Whether he gets redemption or not, I’m all heart eyes for that boy, tantrums and all.

Hard same. With like, everything you said. I love that boy in all his angry, explosive, tearful glory. 

Like, I dunno, maybe it’s me but I can’t really see getting invested in a space opera saga about wizards with laser swords if I wasn’t interested in the hero and the villain.
