Yet another character ask thingie – Ben Solo (or should I call him Kylo Ren???)

Asking the real questions, now, eh? To Ben or not to Ben…
Practically everyone in the movies calls him Ben now, so it’s whatever at this point.

Now let’s see how unpopular I can be.

Why I like them: Where do I start? He’s Han and Leia’s son. He’s super OP. He’s pissed off at the world. He cries a lot. He’s lonely. He’s been targeted by a space demon since before he was born and it fucking shows. His conflict is that he feels pulled towards being a good person! Like… what kind of fucking villain…???!!!!
He’s extreme. He’s brutal. He’s a murderer. He’s blunt and honest (he very rarely lies). He’s conflicted and tortured by his own mind. His past is full of crap from near death at a young age, to public humiliation via finding out Vader was his granddad, to betrayal. He should be a perfect villain.
BUT he’s lost. He’s throwing things at the wall and what sticks is what he goes with. He shows capacity for mercy and compassion in the first scene he’s in by doing nothing about Finn’s refusal to follow orders. He has the potential for light and dark. He *can* be softer, more patient, more understanding. He can be better than he initially appears. He’s layered and fascinating and he just kills.
Why I don’t: He makes awful choices. I mean, I get why he does. He’s fucked up in a ton of different ways so poor decision making is kind of a given but dammit do I suffer when he does dumb stuff.
Favorite episode (scene if movie): The hut scene in TLJ. I just love it because he only says one line “you’re not alone” and the rest of it is in his face. He looks so genuine and unsure, even to the point that his hand is shaking. You can feel the relief and the calm in that scene. And the of course the wide-eyed shock when Luke busts in. It’s a really good scene and I love that it allows him to just be compassionate.
Favorite season/movie: The Last Jedi
Favorite line: “I’m being torn apart. I want to be free of this pain.” from TFA because again, I believe this is genuine and it hurt to watch and I hate it but I think it sums up his motivations and desires really well.
Favorite outfit: That dark flowy cape, cowl, tunic, thing he had going on in TFA.
OTP: Reylo
Brotp: Ben and Finn. I think they could be good friends eventually and I want to see it so bad.
Head Canon: I think he has dreams and visions, too. I think the reason he was instantly like “What girl!” in TFA is because he’d been seeing her in his dreams and meditations for a long time and he *needed* to know who the hell she was. (It would also explain the whole “the girl I’ve heard so much about” even though… there’s like zero reason to hear anything more than “some random girl was seen with that droid we want” and why he was so fixated on finding her.) Why is also the obvious question. My headcanon is that they’re cosmically tied and have been for a lot longer than their first meeting.
Unpopular opinion: He’s not the villain. There, I said it!
He’s not the villain of the ST! Not really. He’s an anti-hero and his character arc is a redemption arc. IF he was meant to be the Big Bad he wouldn’t’ve ended his Then Let Me Be Evil moment alone, on his knees, cradling his father’s dice (symbolically representing his childhood). Emperor or no, if I am supposed to believe he’s a remorseless monster who’s finally come into his own as The Villain, he should be standing up shrouded in darkness or looking forward to evil, not with his head bowed, bathed in light.
Also, this is Star Wars. Vader got redeemed. There’s nothing you can say to me that will make me believe he’s going to die bad.
A wish: I want him to get his shit together. Just please, get your shit together, Ben. Leave the evil organization and be the person you’re being called to be.
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: He just fuckin’ dies a villain, I guess. And everyone is happy about it. (Fuck that with a cactus.)
5 words to best describe them: angry, lost, conflicted, powerful, broken
My nickname for them: I called him Renjamin the other day and my brother lost it so that’s what I’ve been calling him for a while now lol.

Thanks!

Character thingys!

For the character ask Han Solo?

Oh, Fuck Yes!

Why I like them: He’s a jerkass with a heart of gold. Like, he’s kind of a dick and he’s awkward and weird shot a guy mid-conversation once, but he’s always there for the moment that it counts and I love him.
Why I don’t: Would it be fair to say he has issues with committing to things? Like, he’s not exactly known for settling his debts and he’s a bit of a wandering spirit. Flighty (yes, pun intended) is a word I’d use for him.
Favorite episode (scene if movie): Oh man, this is hard. I think Han’s best moments are when he thinks he’s about to die, honestly. It’s a toss up between the bridge scene in TFA and the carbonite scene in ESB but b/c I gave Empire the movie fave I’ll give TFA the scene.
Favorite season/movie: Empire Strikes Back
Favorite line: It’s either “never tell me the odds” from ESB or “I smuggle, not snuggle” from Empire’s End: Aftermath
Favorite outfit: That coat and goggles combo in the Solo trailer looks super snuggly and I’m here for it.
OTP: Hanleia
Brotp: Han and Lando (sorry, Chewie)
Head Canon: Han and Lando were totally a thing. They just were. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.
Unpopular opinion: Oh, lord, what qualifies here? Uhmmm…
Okay, I actually don’t have an issue at all with Han being interested in people other than Leia. A lot of the Solo stuff I’ve seen includes people voicing how upset they’d be if Qi’ra winds up being Han’s love interest and I’m just like… yeah okay but I don’t care. I know who he wound up with and I don’t expect Leia to be the first person he’s ever had feelings for. He’s been across the galaxy a whole bunch, met all kinds of beings, had a fake wife, like… it’s not a surprise? Qi’ra is probably gonna screw him over anyway. It’s not like it really matters so… idk, I just think it’s silly.
Also, I think Alden Ehrenreich is a fine choice of casting for Han Solo and I don’t have an issue with it. I look forward to seeing him do well in the role. (fight me)
A wish: I wish/hope the stand alone Solo movie is going to be good and we can see how he went from an optimist to a cynical jerk.
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: His death means nothing in the grand scheme of things.
5 words to best describe them: He’s got a lot of heart.
My nickname for them: Seems a little redundant to nickname a character that has a three letter name. lol.

Thanks!

Character thingy!

Solo: A Star Wars Story Topps Trading Cards from Denny’s

I’m losing my shit over these new characters’ names. We’ve got:

– Enfys Nest, whose name has a general bird/sky motif rather than just blatant wordplay: her first name is Welsh for ‘rainbow’, she leads a gang called the Cloud Riders, and her armor looks like a robotic secretary bird gijinka

– Moloch, who looks like a cave cricket, and is named after another name for the cave cricket

– Therm (short for Thermidor?) Scissorpunch, because Lobster McLobsterdish was a little too on the nose

-and Argus ‘Six Eyes’ Panox, who’s named after a many-eyed servant of Hera from Greek mythology and whose surname sounds like “pan ocs”, because the writers REALLY wanted us to know this dude had a lot of eyes

tl;dr I honestly feel a lot better about the main robot’s name literally being L337 now because it turns out everyone else in this damn movie also has names based on shitty puns and it’s kind of amazing

Can we talk about how this one panel tears down the idea that Vader hated Obi-Wan beyond all others? Yes, that is certainly a statement that could be taken as scornful, though I read it as at least somewhat wistful. No matter what tone he says it in, and surely it would be with relish and anger, he had to think it first. He does not call Obi-Wan an old fool, nor does he call him a dangerous renegade. He levies no insults at Obi-Wan at all. He’s an old man who thought he could help gifted children.

He recognizes that Obi-Wan wanted to help him. And rather than blaming Obi-Wan for fucking him up, he essentially shoulders the blame as that gifted child for being impossible to help. He actually blames Obi-Wan only for optimism. His destiny, after all, was predetermined. Obi-Wan thought otherwise, but that is not a crime worthy of hatred.

And I kind of get on about this because I think there is literally no canon evidence that Vader directed hatred or energy toward killing Obi-Wan between their duels. Rewind from their pitiful duel on the Death Star, and what do you have? Twenty years of Obi-Wan living in peaceful exile. The EU conjures up reasons for why Vader personally did not hunt down all the Jedi, both creating Inquisitors for us and at times having Palpatine personally counsel against it as a detriment to Vader’s growth as a Sith. But the point remains that Vader did not focus pursuit on Obi-Wan. Rewind further to the duel on Mustafar. Amid Anakin’s ranting, he tells Obi-Wan “Don’t make me kill you.” He waits for a solid declaration of intent from Obi-Wan that a fight must commence. That is not obsession and it is not drive to see Obi-Wan’s death. While they both prepare for the duel they know is inevitable, on both sides, they require that last push to make them fight. It is not an uneven assault where only Anakin pursues combat because he specifically wishes for Obi-Wan to die.

Back to their final, pitiful duel. I know that people like to characterize it as murder since, well, murder and heavy breathing are pretty much what Vader does best. It only barely fits the criteria, since Obi-Wan not only lowers his weapon, but outright declares that when Vader strikes him down, he will become more powerful. He intends for it to happen. Vader is the instrument of his suicide.

How does Vader react? With fury that Obi-Wan denies him even his vengeance? No. Obi-Wan is an old man who thought he could help gifted children. He was mistaken. Now, Vader is well and truly abandoned for Obi-Wan has given up on him and living in a world that has him in it.

This is, in many ways, a sadder interpretation than the more prevalent idea that Vader obsessed over vengeance every hour of the day.
