I agree and the phrase “fandom is eating itself” is a perfect explanation. It sucks but it is something I’ve noticed too. Not sure what to do about it than continue to carefully curate my own online space, I just wish more people would do the same thing
I have a theory that it’s about control. People feel like they have no control in their lives right now, so they’re going to seek out any way they can to gain control because it will make them feel better. And yeah, it does in the short run but it doesn’t help in the long run. The only thing it does is make fandom as a whole a war ground where the drama du jour is always super serious and we lose all sense of perspective. When everything becomes an -ism and everything becomes “bad” or “wrong” or whatever, how are any of us supposed to take real issues with fandom seriously? At this point I really feel like fandom has become a parody of itself. A parody and a battle ground where the small bloggers who just wanna chill out and enjoy themselves get eaten by the big fish who want things their way and their way only.
The only thing I can think of doing is pointing out how bad it is and creating spaces where it’s safer and more positive. We can’t make anyone do anything, but we can be nicer to each other, more courteous, and more supportive.
