THE HANDMAIDS TALE HAS STOLEN AN ARTIST’S WORK!

THEY HAVE ALSO INSULTED THE PAGAN RELIGIONS!

Please, please, PLEASE share this. I am so tired of my religion being trampled, appropriated, and oppressed. I need people to know about this.Ā

A TLDR; They have stolen our sacred goddess and perverted her meaning, and atĀ the same timeĀ stolen the original work of an artist.

(The above photo is of an earring, and that’s why the shape is less refined.)

I am deeply upset by this, it is so infuriating, degrading, demonizing, disrespectful, and callous.

Oberon Zell is a well known artist in the pagan community. He’s part of the neo-pagan goddess movement, and has contributed to our classic modern depictions of the goddess. He designed Astra in the 1980′s.

Here are some screen caps from the show:

Here’s a photo of a necklace using Zell’s design: (Source:Ā https://www.goddessgift.net/moon-goddess-selene.html0 )

As you can see, this is clearly his design. Although he draws influence from the Nile goddess silhouette and possible depictions of a lunar Madonna, his design is unique and original. It is inspired by ancient goddess statues, BUT IT IS HIS OWN WORK OF ART!Ā

FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT, let’s say its a simple design and they came up with it on their own, inspired by neo-pagan lunar goddesses and the Nile goddess. They still chose a modern pagan symbol of female empowerment to use for a cult based on Christianity’s female oppression. I truly feel like this is similar to nazi’s appropriating the swastika from the Hindu religion. They have used us. They have re-defined our symbol as disgusting and oppressive, they have stolen our sacred goddess and perverted her meaning. If I wear his pin, people will think of the Handmaid’s tale TV show, and think it’s a reference.Ā

I DO NOT CARE if they meant for it to be ironic and sad that there is a contradiction between the meaning of the symbol and the group it represents, they do so at the expense of our dignity. A better symbol would be the famous silhouette of the virgin Mary, the ultimate example of dutiful motherhood with dubious consent. (Example: https://goo.gl/images/74aLsF). People will clearly understand its other meaning, so it wont destroy its religious significance. They can even do a stylized version to make the show’s version recognizable. And, the whole point of the red center (as I understand) is a portrayal of Christian extremism. Don’t they use ā€˜bible’ verses to subjugate the women? No christian organization would be willing to use a pagan goddess, becauseĀ ā€œsatanism.ā€ (Their bigotry has perverted the meaning of the pentagram already).

I have to suck it up when shows use a pentagram for an evil symbol or talk about some demon ā€œSamHainā€, but I can not stand the appropriation of the new designs we create ourselves. This is erasure and delegitimization of pagan religions.Ā

I’m going to keep bosting this

Can we seriously fucking stop stealing Pagan symbology and using it for bullshit?? Between this and the IRL fascist babies stealing Heathenry symbols it’s getting asinine. Stop taking our shit and forcing the association with racist, sexist, bigots!

i dont think ive ever been more excited to watch a 1:50 hour video

it starts off tearing into doctor who under moffat and hbomberguy i could kiss you i love you great video already

please watch this video if you care about or have cared about sherlock or doctor who on any level its cathartic

this is the third time i’ve seen someone discover this video and watch all of it despite it’s length because it’s… that good

anyway, how do i letterbox this

This video is an incredible rundown of the major problems with Moffat’s writing, both in Doctor Who and Sherlock and properly puts to words a lot of my frustrations with him.Ā

Here’s a summary for those without the stamina for a nearly two hour video.

Ā He starts off that given people to answer to and the constraints of a one-off episode that doesn’t majorly affect the plot, Moffat writes an incredible story, and I agree. His one-off episodes on DW and even his parody spinoff were well done.

However when given almost complete control, he just makes plots that are too complicated and full of themselves. Eg instead of having a reveal be a catalyst for major character development, the reveal itself is the draw and just leads to more cliffhangers which lead to more cliffhangers and the answer is alwaysĀ ā€œjust watch and find outā€. His writing is filled to the brim with the insinuation that there is more beneath the surface, but never follows through on those hints making the audience increasingly frustrated.

He completely misses the point of the shows he creates, making the main character The Most Special and bending over backwards to make everything about him instead of actually telling a compelling story. In the original Holmes stories, and in every mystery story ever made, the audience gets all the same information as the characters and we have a chance of solving the case ourselves. The detective is the hero because they put together information we would not have thought to connect. Sherlock increasingly pulls information out of thin air and there is no way the audience can have a hope of keeping up as the explanations get more and more far-fetched. The show even explicitly demonizes the people who do this! The narrator goes through each season and how this tendency just gets worse and worse.

Another point of the Holmes mysteries was the fact that they were one-off stories. You could read one without feeling like you’re lost in a bigger narrative, and shows like House that also draw from that source material generally follow that plot-of-the-week style. Straight off the bat Moffat tried to spin this complicated web of intrigue that eventually gave even the most dedicated viewers whiplash from the constant BS plot twists. He talked about the fan conspiracy that there was actually a secret fourth episode of the fourth season because on its own it was so unbelievably bad that fans thought it had to be on purpose and there had to be a greater underlying reason to explain it. (There wasn’t.)

He also dips into how Moffat has a clear contempt for the source material and rewrites these characters to be completely different in all but name, mentioning the queercoding of the villains as well. What made the plots interesting or meaningful in the first place is completely erased. John Watson is turned from the everyman narrator into the guy who has absolutely nothing useful to do except get kidnapped or drugged or put in mortal danger for Sherlock to save.Ā

That’s the general idea of it!Ā

Serious question. Did you remember who Philando Castile was when the verdict came out? Or have so many black men been killed by police that you honestly weren’t sure which one he was?

He’s the man who very politely informed the officer that he was carrying a gun (one he had a permit to carry). He did this, we can assume, to prevent the cop from panicking and shooting him if he saw the gun. But the officer shot him anyway. Fired 7 times into a car with not only Philando Castile in it, but also his girlfriend and her four-year-old daughter. Castile’s girlfriend livestreamed the aftermath. It was disturbing as hell to watch. The officer was still pointing his gun at them. Still more concerned about the girlfriend keeping her hands where he can see them than the man dying in front of him. And the girlfriend? Calm. Because you have to be calm when someone is pointing a gun at you and just shot your boyfriend for no reason. You have to reassure him – the man who just killed your boyfriend in front of your daughter – that you’re no threat.Ā

The cop was found not guilty of all charges. According to our justice system, he did nothing wrong. He was fearing for his life.Ā

Have you spotted the flaw in the system yet?Ā

If all you have to do to be able to shoot whoever you like is be afraid of them, then racism literally is your defense. If you – consciously or subconsciously – believe that black people are inherently dangerous, then any encounter with them could lead you to fear for your life. They reach for their wallet? You were afraid for your life. They have skittles in their pocket? You were afraid for your life. He was running away and you shot him in the back? You were afraid for your life.

And as long as some of the people on the jury share your prejudices, you’ll be able to convince them it was totally reasonable to be afraid in that moment. How would they have felt, in your shoes? In this country, probably just as irrationally afraid of someone reaching for their wallet as you were. And there you have it. Racism was the cause. Racism was the defense. Racism was how the jury reached their conclusion.Ā

This is important because this is not the kind of racism that leads people to put on white sheets and light crosses on fire.Ā

A recent study showed photographs of men to volunteers, and found that black men were perceived as being larger, stronger, and more muscular than their white counterparts.Ā

An APA study on specifically police officersĀ found a tendency to dehumanize blackĀ people. Black children as young as ten years old were perceived as being older and less innocent than white children.Ā

This is not a coincidence. Jim Crow era whites had a vested interest in keeping the public wary and distrustful of black people, and since they controlled the media, they were able to spread caricatures that persist to this day.Ā

This is why we need black representation. There is a severe dearth of positive black perception and it is causing subconscious racism that is literally getting people killed.Ā

I’ve continued to watch it but Clara is just… UGHHHH. I don’t like her. I like Capaldi’s doctor cause he kinda reminds me of more classic Who but I guess they’re getting rid of him when they finally come back.

Really? Why? I heard all kinds of good things about him. I couldn’t stand Clara. I only watched a few eps w/her in them (the specials mostly) but I never liked her and I didn’t think Capaldi could save it for me. Cause it’s not just Clara, it’s that the whole thing kinda changed tone in a way I didn’t like. I don’t know how to describe it, it just lost it’s luster for me. But I’m glad you’re still enjoying it!

Mr. Rogers would have lifted Mjƶlnir easily.

He wouldn’t have had to *lift* it. Thor would have very politely handed it to him.

A+

Mjƶlnir would have flown itself to Mr. Rogers the moment he was in proximity, and Mr. Rogers would have been delighted to greet Mjƶlnir and tell it how wonderfully constructed it was. Then he would have gently and lovingly reminded both Mjƶlnir and Thor that a hammer is a tool used to build things, and doesn’t it feel so much nicer to work together to build things than to fight each other and destroy them? Only he would have managed to say it in a way that sounded utterly nonjudgemental about any fighting Thor may have done in the past or might do in the future, but Thor and Mjƶlnir would still have taken a break from the Avengers to go be the most efficient habitat for humanity workers ever.
