I can’t believe I literally just read with my own two eyes someone claiming that being white in South Africa is worse than being white in the US. Like, they seemed to imply that if you’re white in South Africa you have to face oppression???? Are you… your fuckin’ kidding me, right????
Like, I get it. I grew up in a super racist environment and I know the first time you get confronted with the fact that some of the things you’ve been taught to believe (and do believe) are racist and that the systems you benefit from fuck people of color over, you get defensive. There are all kinds of lies white people tell themselves to feel less bad and pretend that it’s somehow equal because white people somewhere are discriminated against (even though if they were and on the exact same level as Black Americans or Chicanx Americans or Asian Americans etc. somewhere in the world it doesn’t mean white Americans or white westerners don’t have privileged status because of their whiteness).
Maybe just, before you get defensive and say something stupid, do a little reading. And then maybe realize you can change your thinking, quit getting so butthurt right away and listen to people. Having white privilege and recognizing you benefit from racist systems isn’t a moral statement about you as a person. Recognizing that you have white privilege and live in a racist system is about understanding the reality of the world you live it and, ideally, trying to change it. But for the love of all that is good in the world, quit trying to pretend it’s the same for white people as it is for everyone else.
