Amara Appreciation Post

rosemoonweaver:

Oh, Amara. You had so much potential and yet… well, we’ll leave the salt for another post. Amara, the Goddess and first being of the universe herself is often underappreciated in fandom, and that’s a damn shame. Let’s look at some reasons to appreciate and love Amara.

  • She’s a Goddess. Literally. And a Dark Goddess at that (which is often equated with “evil” but that’s just not the case.)
  • She was locked away since before the beginning of time because she was a threat to Chuck’s creation. (Hey, look at that metaphor for pre-Christian religions!) But she wanted a chance to create something of her own.
  • She eats souls and grace and demon smoke. That’s pretty fricken cool.
  • She saw pain in the world and did what she thought made sense to fix it. Granted, taking the souls from people doesn’t really help anyone, but it’s more than Chuck ever did.
  • Speaking of doing more than Chuck ever did, she didn’t just make a complex world full of complex creatures that loved and hurt and killed each other and begged for help from their creator only to leave because they were “flawed”. She played favorites, sure, but she at least paid attention to her favorites.
  • I’m fairly certain nothing could’ve killed her.
  • She almost killed God. Then, she healed God.
  • She’s quite possibly the most powerful being in the universe.
  • The change of her outfit is subtle but super interesting. She goes from pink to red, then to black, then a very dark gray. Her nail polish, too, changes from black to clear over the course of the season.
  • She’s got such a nice smile!
  • She saw Dean Winchester, the person she’d gotten to know intimately via The Mark (her imprisonment) and decided he’d be a great partner to create the world in her image with. (Hello, again, pagan metaphors!)
  •  She wasn’t evil. More than anything she was naive. She didn’t understand the way the world worked, how Chuck had abandoned his children, or that you can’t just go around eating souls and claiming people without their consent. She just needed to understand this, and the concept of forgiveness in order to be happy.
  • Her forgiveness of Chuck is a little controversial (to me at least) but I suppose the lesson we’re supposed to learn is to be the bigger person, and that revenge doesn’t really solve anything. Funny how God is the one that needs to be forgiven, no?
  • She confused her desire to have a meaningful relationship with her brother for a desire to have a romantic partner. Really, she just wanted a partner in crime, so-to-speak. (Hey, I wouldn’t be Supernatural if it wasn’t throwing off weird vibes, right?)
  • She tried to do a genuinely kind thing for Dean by giving him his mom back. It was actually an incredibly sweet gesture.
  • Amara was perhaps the most interesting villain that wasn’t a villain. She was confused (how could you not after being locked away for so long) and really just wanted reconciliation and happiness. The fact that she got that and not death is a victory in my book. She could have been a great, devastating force, but her story was a little different and I appreciate that.

Linda Tran Appreciation Post

rosemoonweaver:

Every once in a while you’ll get a character who’s just too badass for their own good. Linda Tran was definitely one of those people, honestly. She’s fierce, loving, and she deserved more screen time. Here are some reasons to love and appreciate Linda Tran.

  • She’s a single mom. Her husband died when Kevin was young, but she’s not defined by the fact that she’s a widow.
  • She’s very driven in her own right and that rubbed off on her son. She might’ve pushed him to succeed, but she never acted as if Kevin’s future was more important than his well-being and she never mentioned what he “should” be doing instead of being a prophet.
  • She was clever and resourceful. She blackmailed a pawn shop owner with tax law and that’s kinda badass.
  • Her anti-possession tattoo was not her first tattoo and that’s just amazing. Also, she handled getting a tattoo like it was nothing. (And even comforted her son while he was getting his.)
  • She offered her own soul for her son’s life and safety. She won the auction because offering her soul was the most valuable thing she could offer.
  • She punched Crowley in the face.
  • She told angels off for not protecting her son properly.
  • She was incredibly traumatized and unresponsive after she was possessed by Crowley. That scene was really freaking powerful and I think the only one like it that we’ve seen.
  • She hired a witch off Craigslist. That’s the most mom thing to ever happen.
  • She supersoakered Crowley with holy water.
  • She was captured and tortured by demons after Kevin’s death. She killed the demon who tortured her after she was rescued.
  • She took her son’s ghost home because she wanted to look after and protect him even though he was a ghost.
  • She loved her son fiercely.
  • She got really tired of the Winchester’s inability to keep Kevin safe and she let them know about it, too.
  • Linda Tran really just wanted what was best for her son and that’s very clear based on what she did. She was fierce, clever, resourceful, and she wasn’t going to put up with shit. She didn’t die but she lost a lot when Kevin died and I just hope that she got reconciliation and is a little happier now that the supernatural is out of her life.

Abaddon Appreciation Post

rosemoonweaver:

Man, I love a good villain. Seriously, there is nothing better in my book. But of all the villains Supernatural has given us over the years, Abaddon is my favorite female villain. Here are some reasons to love and appreciate Abaddon.

  • She’s seriously wicked. All she wants is to cause terror and destruction and she does so with a smile.
  • She’s a Knight of Hell. That mean’s she’s one of the oldest demons on the planet and was trained by Lucifer himself.
  • She infiltrated the American Men of Letters and waited for her opportunity to strike before she went after them. She succeeded in essentially destroying the entire chapter and leaving it inactive for decades.
  • While Crowley was fine with allowing demons to hedge their bets, she sure as hell wasn’t. She killed demons who refused to follow her or tried to switch sides.
  • She forced Cain to kill his wife. That’s just cruel. (And obviously, that’s a bad thing.)
  • She could only be killed by the first blade if the wielder of the blade had the Mark of Cain.
  • She killed Henry Winchester. (Again, not a good thing but she’s a villain so that’s what she’s supposed to do.)
  • She actually has a bit of a sense of humor. She stole the outfit off someone she killed because she liked the “the Devil made me do it” shirt. That’s a little funny.
  • She found a somewhat efficient way of capturing souls in jars to make demons without waiting from demon deals to come due.
  • Her attempted manipulate Crowley with his son, Gavin, kinda worked. She read him pretty well.
  • She can’t be exorcized.
  • She can also insert part of her demon form into a person and read their memories.
  • She can manipulate fire, move her own dismembered body parts, and cause electronics to malfunction.
  • Holy fire can injure her but no kill her.
  • More than anything, Abaddon was a fun villain. She was a real threat who couldn’t be reasoned with or killed easily. All she wanted was death and destruction just for the fun of it and that is always enjoyable to see. She was wicked, cruel, and delightfully malicious.

Death Appreciation Post

rosemoonweaver:

You know, being in the spn fandom results in some really strange typed sentences; “I really liked Death” being one of them. But, with such a cool character, it’s kind of hard not to say it, right? Here are some reasons to love and appreciate Death.

  • His entrance.
  • His presence.
  • The fact that Death, the Horseman himself, really loves junk food is hilarious, relatable, and kind of concerning when you think about it. (Like, Death likes Chicago Deep Dish. Is that because it’s good or because eating way too much junk food will kill you? Both probably.)
  • He’s presented as a neutral party in the apocalypse. He really doesn’t want to do anything he doesn’t want to do and finds the petty squabbling of the angels tired and annoying.
  • Death is actually pretty neutral throughout his many appearances, even if he does have a soft spot for the Winchesters. He doesn’t want to be used as a pawn but is willing to help if the threat to the world (Lucifer, Godstiel, Demon!Dean) is significant enough.
  • He was one of the oldest beings in existence.
  • Unlike the other Horsemen, he really didn’t seem to relish in his job. He was Death, but it wasn’t like he wanted everyone to die. He seemed much more concerned with balance than anyone else in the spn universe.
  • He considered it an honor to reap Sam Winchester.
  • He confirmed the existence of life on other planets.
  • He’s really damn blunt. I like it.
  • Apparently, he can be killed.
  • Of all the characters on spn, he’s probably the only one who reallly isn’t that concerned with what happens to the world. Sure, he’ll help but he’s not going to go out of the way to do it and he certainly isn’t going to clean-up other people’s messes. He was a fascinating character.

Benny Lafitte Appreciation Post

rosemoonweaver:

I love Benny. He’s a cuddly vampire with a good heart and a wonderful smile and it’s a shame he didn’t get to stick around longer. Here are a few reasons to love and appreciate Benny.

  • Benny was a vampire but he wasn’t interested in hurting anyone. He even went so far as to drink donate blood rather than attack people for sustenance.
  • He was a pirate when he was alive. Not a Golden Age of Piracy pirate (unfortunately) but a pirate nonetheless.
  • He spent some time working for his great-granddaughter in her diner. He killed a hunter to save her life.
  • He fell in love with a human and unfortunately had to find out that she had been turned into a vampire and was willing to continue hunting humans. She died in front of him.
  • He was never really able to fit in again after his return from Purgatory and that’s a shame.
  • He was actually a good person.
  • He saved Castiel’s life in Purgatory even though moments before he argued that Castiel probably wouldn’t make it through the portal and should be left behind. He relents, giving in to Dean’s judgment and saves Cas even though he didn’t have to.
  • Benny died so Sam would be able to find the way out of Purgatory and stayed behind because he didn’t feel he belonged among the living.
  • The last we see of Benny is a fight he has with vampires. We don’t know if he won or lost.
  • He has an awesome hat.
  • His tearful goodbye with Dean is sad and terrible and also great.
  • His southern drawl is fun. We haven’t had many characters (who aren’t some manner of British) with noticeable accents.
  • Numerous innuendos can be made about how he was carried by Dean out of Purgatory.
  • Benny was an all around good dude who, much to my surprise, did not turn out to be a bad guy and given the Winchester’s history with monster allies up to that point, it was great to see. He was like a big, cuddly vampire teddy bear who was still willing to kick ass when needed.

Henry Winchester Appreciation Post

rosemoonweaver:

It’s a shame Henry was around for only a single episode (and later a flashback). He had potential, and his introduction brought forth the most constant home the Winchesters have ever had (not to mention the potential for new conflicts). Outside of that, Henry was fun and a pretty good dude, so here are a few reasons to love and appreciate Henry Winchester.

  • He’s a snazzy dresser.
  • He’s introduced to Sam and Dean by falling out of a closet. Not the most dramatic entrance the show’s ever given but probably one of the most humorous.
  • He was minutes away from being inducted into the Men of Letters when Abaddon attacked. He was a legacy and part of the side of Sam and Dean’s family that had been involved in the academic side of the supernatural (in contrast to Samuel’s side which was all hunting).
  • It was pretty sad that the first thing he found out about 2013 was that his son was dead.
  • He’s a huge nerd.
  • He adapts pretty well to being sent 60 years in the future. His gaffs aren’t even that bad. (The computer thing, for one, is pretty funny.)
  • He didn’t abandon his family. In fact, he was so worried about leaving his son to grow up without him that he nearly abandoned the whole Abaddon mess to be with John and Millie. (Later we find out he was actually afraid of dying and leaving his wife and child without him.)
  • He tried to steal the Impala.
  • He doesn’t really get along with Sam and Dean at first, but he comes around as they are his grandsons and they aren’t “knuckle dragging hunters” as he first thought.
  • He still visited his friend, Magnus, after Magnus was banished from the AMoL.
  • He and Dean came up with the plan to trap Abaddon in her vessel by shooting her with a bullet engraved with a devil’s trap.
  • He died a really gruesome death. He had his guts pulled out.
  • He was buried in a MoL cemetery. He’s one of only a handful of characters to actually be burried.
  • Henry was one of the few blood-relatives of Sam and Dean we’ve seen on the show and his entrance not only explained a bit of information about the past, but also may have given us insight into the motivations of other characters. He also introduced a new location and the potential for new plots and I only wish he could’ve stayed around just a little longer.

Cain Appreciation Post

rosemoonweaver:

Cain was an interesting demon. He had a definite presence, a sad backstory, and an awesome head of hair. Cain was a fun addition to the spn universe and here are some reasons to love and appreciate him.

  • He’s one of the oldest characters on the show, one of the first humans ever and also one of the first demons ever.
  • He was the first and last knight of Hell. He was created first and died last.
  • He had the Mark of Cain longer than anyone else and kept it’s homicidal influence at bay the longest.
  • He traded his soul for his brother, Able’s.
  • His hair was awesome. Seriously. I adore the long silver locks and the beard.
  • He invented murder. I’m not sure if that’s an accomplishment but it’s a thing he did.
  • He fell in love with a human woman named Collette. He gave up killing and tried to be a better person for her and didn’t attempt to avenge her death because he promised her he wouldn’t.
  • He picked up killing again because…. the plot demanded it?  he just couldn’t hold it back anymore. His solution was to kill anyone who ever came from his line which was a pretty high level of brutal and basically needless. (Not a reason to appreciate him, per say but I had to mention it as an edit to the previous point because someone what gonna.)
  • Master of unimpressed-while-drinking-beer-and-shucking-corn face.
  • He read Dean like a book, pointing out how Dean would probably kill the three most important people to him in the reverse order that he did.
  • He’s got one hell of a presence.
  • He kept bees. Cool hobby and good for protecting bees and the flowers!
  • He wrecked a whole room full of demons.
  • He as super neat powers. Making Crowley silent was a really neat trick.
  • Cain was a super interesting demon. Despite inventing murder and taking on the Mark, he was able to live a relatively peaceful life for a while because a promise he made to his dying wife. He was definitely fun to have around.

Jody Mills Appreciation Post

rosemoonweaver:

Jody Mills is probably one of my favorite female characters. She’s tough, smart, and kind even though she’s been through a lot of crap. Jody is an awesome character, and here are some reasons to love and appreciate Jody Mills.

  • She’s a badass sheriff.
  • Her son died, then was resurrected then turned into a zombie and ate her husband. Despite that terrible event, she has opened her heart to the possibility of love with another person several times, and has taken in two girls.
  • She’s super frank and speaks her mind often.
  • She was the first one to alert Bobby, Sam, and Dean that the Leviathans had taken human form (even if she didn’t know they were Leviathans at first).
  • She shut own Doug and called him out on fatshaming.
  • She’s really open about having conversatios about safe sex. (And at the dinner table, no less.)
  • She’s a hunter in her own right but also holds down a job as the sheriff of Soux Falls. She’s also covered for hunters in the past.
  • She once stabbed a goddess with a stake she pulled out of her own chest.
  • She went on a blind date with Crowley. She nearly died but she was saved.
  • She’s funny.
  • She’s supportive and want to keep communication open with both her adopted daughters and her friends.
  • She wants the best for Alex and Claire and has tried to encourage them to have normal lives.
  •  She held her own against a brainwashed Mary and subdued her with Alex’s help.
  • She shot Dr. Hess right in the head.
  • She’s tough but compassionate. She sets boundaries but she is willing and able to meet Sam, Dean, Alex, and Claire with love, understanding, and acceptance.
  • Despite being only three years older than Dean she still “moms” him and Sam from time to time (and it’s great).
  • Jody Mills is one of the best minor characters spn has. She’s tough but compassionate, badass and comforting, bold and fun. She’s complex and hunting doesn’t define her life. She’s a good person with a great heart.

helianthus21:

Hey, wanna tell me about your favorite non-TFW character and what you like best about them?:)

Just one? I can’t pick just one!

Okay… let’s go with Meg.

She was just so much damn fun! She was a snarky villain, a great ally, and ultimately died to save Sam, Dean, and Cas. She wasn’t perfect and didn’t pretend to be. She really did an amazing turn around in character after the apocalypse and I loved her arc.
