Balthazar fans UNITE! There was sooo much unstated history between Cas and Balthazar! And think of all the jealous!Dean scenes we could have gotten if Balthazar had stuck around

lol. See, I’d say I’d give my left buttcheek for some explination of their history but it will probably never be as good as it is in my head. Guess I’m just gonna have to write some stuff someday. (I have some theories as to what happened and why.)
You know what’s funny about Dean and Balthazar? They’re a lot alike. They’re both kinda flippant assholes (Dean can definitely be an asshole) who enjoy sex and drinking and are sarcastic as all hell. I would love to see them just not get along until eventually, they do.

Sure! I don’t really have any prompts lying around but here are some things I’ve been thinking about in regards to Destiel. They might be fun to play with.

Broadway Musical by Griftings (destiel)

This is one of my favorite fics of all time. It’s got a lot of kudos so I don’t rec it a lot, but it kills me every single time. What I really love is the way that the voices of the angels, God, and Jimmy Novak are presented in the fic. The form of the story is a big part of what sells the fic for me. And it’s funny as hell, so that’s a bonus.

Why Does It Have to Be (Wrong or Right) by @samanddeaninpanties (winjimstiel + benny) 

Cas and Jimmy are sexy tattoo artists, Sam gets off on pain and Dean is having a really hard time dealing with it. Need I say more? Seriously, it’s an awesome fic and I adore it. There will never be enough winjimstiel for my needs, but this one hits a lot of great notes.

This is my new favorite headcanon about the bunker. Apparently, it’s alive and hungry and creates lots of inconveniences for Sam and Dean and confuses poor Cas. Check it out, it’s funny as hell.

This fic made me cry, okay! Like a little weepy baby! It’s painful but happy and it hurts but it’s great and I just wanna wrap myself up in it. It’s ftm!Dean and it literally does kill me because it’s just too good for its own good. 

5. A FIC FOCUSED ON A FEMALE CHARACTER

I had never considered Claire and Emma as a pairing before this but I really love it. Claire’s kind of an asshole but it fits her character and Emma actually has a character and personality. It’s a really good little femslash fic. 

6. A FIC WHICH MADE YOU SEE A CHARACTER IN A NEW LIGHT

Changes in Lattitudes by @winjennster (wincestiel)

Not so much a change in perspective for me but more of a “huh, I really like Sam and Cas together”. Like, I really appreciate that Cas doesn’t give a rats ass about social taboos, that Sam is a total sneaky bastard, and that Dean is….Dean. (You know what I mean.) But yeah, I think this one was the first fic that gave me a chance to see Sam and Cas teaming up and being awesome and wicked and I freaking loved it. 

7. A FIC WHICH MADE YOU SHIP SOMETHING

Pitchers and Catchers by @unforth-ninawaters (deanjimstiel)

Not only did this fic make me ship a thing, it threw me into this wild tailspin of multishipping. (Deanjimstiel is a gateway ship, I’m tellin’ ya.) I think this has probably been most people’s introduction to Dean/Cas/Jimmy and for good reason. The conflict is amazing, the baseball is a lot of fun, and I really enjoyed how the characters grew. There was only one thing I ever was like “yeah, sure, never gonna happen” about it, but then I was proven completely wrong and I should eat my hat. (I’m not spoiling it, but you’ll know it when you see it.) Read it. It’s been highly influential in the DCJ fandom and is also a damn good fic. 

(Also, it took me forever to realize the title was a gay sex joke…shut up.) 

8. A FIC WHICH INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE

Tell Me the One by wallmakerrelict (dean/cas/inias) 

This one really makes me want to write an endverse fic but I know I won’t be able to do it with the atmosphere this one has. The way the word is presented is just tragic and beautiful and oppressive and sad and I love it. I’d like to be able to write something like this (and I’ve tried with dean/cas/inias/sam) but this one just… idk, it sticks with me. 

9. A FIC WITH A PARTICULARLY MEMORABLE LINE

Put Up Your Dukes by saltyfeathers (destiel)

“Okay,” he announces. “I’ve figured it out. Cas, are you ready to witness the reading comprehension my teachers in school never thought I had?”

“Those teachers obviously didn’t give you the chance you des-”

“Okay here we go. So, it’s a metaphor. Like the bath tub.”

“The bath tub is a metaphor?” Cas asks. “When did that happen?”

“A while ago, don’t worry about it. Anyway, about the hidebehinds. Well, what do they do?”

Cas just looks at him.

“Hide,” Dean prompts, raising his brows pointedly. “And what did I do after the- uh-” he glances at Sam, who he did ask not to listen, but still. There are some things he’s still maybe not ready to talk about when in mixed company, and The Thing That Happened In The Gym is one of them. “The thing?” he finishes. “I hid. Like, literally. Behind walls and everything. Even at the time I knew how pathetic it was.”

“So… you’re the hidebehinds in this metaphor?” Cas asks.

That’s all I’m gonna say because it just gets worse/funnier from there and I don’t want to spoil it. 

10. FREE CATEGORY

I’m gonna use this as an opportunity to give a shout out to @pherryt and @deadlykittenkay . @pherryt is currently writing a work called Order of Protection that’s marvelous and you should check it out and @deadlykittenkay wrote a fic called What Happens in Hawaii that painted a beautiful picture of the island and provided a wonderful dose of fluff. 

What’s your all time favorite fic?

All time forever favorite fic is Put Up Your Dukes by saltyfeathers. It kills me every time and I’ve read it 5 or 6 times. It’s destiel set in canon and it’s told from Dean’s POV. The whole thing is really funny and Dean is incredibly neurotic. Cas is also a little shit and Sam is long-suffering and he’s got some good lines, too. I love the fic. It’s not too angsty or fluffy but it’s a fic I really love. 

But, The Siren and the Sea Monster by @ltleflrt is my second favorite. I just love it a lot. Dean works for Cain and plays guitar, Cas is an octopus…mermaid…person…? But it’s really sweet and I adore it. Also, tentacles because I’m one of those people. And Cas asking Dean if he’s a siren is the cutest damn thing ever.

It’s a mutually beneficial agreement, nothing more – a little play-acting in return for a single soul. And play-acting is all it is; Dean and Hades, God of Death, aren’t really together. Of course not. They just need to convince a Pantheon of Ancient Gods that they could be.

Thoughts: I get the urge to read this every time the seasons change. It’s one of those fics where the ideas are just so damn intriguing that I want to live in in the world of the fic for days inside my head. I’m just so weak for mythology AUs and this one takes a really interesting approach to mythology AUs. For one, the names of gods are more like titles as these gods die and need to be replaced by humans suitable for life with these powers. There’s a touch of reincarnation here, but not quite as the new gods aren’t born right when the old ones die. Still, it’s very interesting. 

The characters cast as the gods are so on point. I was so pleased to see the casting that the author used here, especially with the characters on Olypumus. This fic re-tells two classic Greek myths, and I enjoyed both of the versions the author presented. There is also a wonderful scene where Cas and Dean make their way to Olympus and the way it’s done is heavy but it works well. I could have literally read 100k more of this AU, but I’m very hapy with what the author gave us. 

War of the Broses by @eriquin

AKA: Jock!Dean and punk!Cas (let’s be real they’re both actually big nerds) play gay chicken. Except neither of them really wants to win. Or lose, for that matter.

Thoughts: I don’t usually enjoy reading high school AUs, but I really enjoyed reading this. I love a good prank war fic, and these are some really fun and creative pranks. The characters also feel like real teenagers, which is something I really liked. It was a fun enemies to lovers fic and I really liked seeing their relationship grow. Also, there are lines in this fic (like when Anna lets Cas she’s a lesbian and he responds “Oh. Okay. Well, Dad’ll be pleased” “And the Novak kids are oh-for-three with heterosexuality, it seems”) that really made me chuckle. This was also another fic where the reveal at the end surprised and delighted me, so give it a read if you haven’t already. It’s definitely worth it.

Just before they finish loading the moving truck Dean finds a long-forgotten box under Cas’s bed crammed full of handwritten letters. Most of them are from Cas’s sister Anna, but some are labeled for Dean. He can only resist reading for so long, and once he starts he can’t stop. Each letter reveals more of Cas’s perspective on their relationship over the four years they’ve known each other, and with each one Dean finds himself changing too.

Thoughts: This fic still sticks in my mind a year after I read it. It’s damn beautiful, honestly and there were whole chapters that absolutely broke my heart. I love that so much of the drama and tension were created because Dean and Cas were in different countries and that Dean’s snooping puts him in a situation where he knows more than he should but still doesn’t everything. There’s also some really great stuff in the fic with Dean dealing with depression and selective mutism. It’s a beautiful fic and it hurts to read but it hurts in a wonderful way. The fic is really centered around Dean and his understanding of the world around him. He has his own issues with depression and those come through strong in the fic without ever feeling overdone. Also, John Winchester makes an appearance and I kinda wanna punch him in the face for it. The emotions are real and palpable and I remember needing to walk the fic off at times. It’s a wonderful story and I highly suggest you read it.

Although he’d intended to drown his sorrows alone, a bold alpha (who introduced himself as Castiel) wormed his way into his party-for-one, but more importantly: his story.
After brazenly announcing that Dean’s plan to shoot himself in the head was “unoriginal,” the alpha lured him out into the bar to prove there are much more interesting and creative ways to go.
A bizarre, deranged game turns into a night of passion, and leads Dean into introspective questions he never would’ve asked before. Maybe everything wasn’t as black and white as he thought, maybe there’s more to his own story that he, himself, didn’t even know. The stupid fucking alpha had transformed his world into shades of gray and made him doubt everything.

Thoughts: This fic revolves around suicide, so if that’s an issue for you I don’t suggest you read the fic. I will say, however, that the fic handles the topic with both a morbid sense of humor and a seriousness that is well balanced. The moral of the story comes through loud and clear at the end, even if a large part of the first act is spent playing a morbid sort of game. There are two twists in this fic, one of which you’ll most likely be able to pick up and one that might surprise you. The author does try to shake you off a bit regarding the second twist, but not to the point that it feels completely out of nowhere. The atmosphere of the fic is up there with some of the best I’ve read in a really long time. I can practically smell the bar when I read it and it feels both heavy and oppressive and light and easy as the fic goes on. It’s a good fic and I enjoyed it. I just wish there had been more Sam here, but it makes sense in terms of plot as to why he’s not in it.

Thoughts: This fic is a breath of fresh air after… well, you know. It’s a long fic set in canon verse that feels pretty possible. Dean and Cas continue to hunt after Sam decides he’d rather set up a headquarters in the MoL bunker, and there are several cases that Dean and Cas tackle together in the fic. Sam gets his own chapter, as well, and a girlfriend and a dog! I really like the set up for TFW post-canon in this fic. Dean and Cas get to be happy but also continue to hunt, Sam finds his niche and gets his slice of happiness, and even though Dean and Sam are apart for extended periods they’re not distant or estranged. Both brothers make their own paths and they’re happy. The cases have good pacing and deal with different issues for both Dean and Cas and panic is presented really nicely in the fic. It’s a good fic and I really enjoyed it. Also, it’s got a built-in soundtrack!

I Don’t Want a Lot For Solstice by aerialste

In which Dean drives out to Palo Alto to stay with Sam over winter break, and meets Sam’s new co-op housemates, including comparative literature PhD candidate, fundamentalist cult survivor, and practicing witch Castiel Milton—which would all be confusing enough, if Cas weren’t also unfairly gorgeous, especially in cowboy boots.

Thoughts: This is required holiday reading for me. Witch!Cas is a giant weakness for me, but especially when Cas is like he is in this. The tone of the work is fairly funny and I enjoy the way the house Cas, Sam, Kevin, and Charlie live in is portrayed. It’s a little nuts, but it makes a lot of sense given the characters living in the house. Cas is very upfront with shades of Endverse!Cas and nice to watch the way he and Dean interact. It’s a fun fic that’s also a little wacky, and it’s well worth the read. And, I pretty fair depiction of some neo-Pagan practices. 

What is your favorite story that you have written? What is your favorite fanfic by someone else?

I’ll sound like a broken record if I say Some Things Last again, so I’ll talk about my second favorite. 

Under the Surface. (AKA Dean gets captured a whole fucking lot.) It’s a destiel, fantasy-ish, pirate au. Because you know what’s awesome? Pirate Captain!Cas, that’s what’s awesome. I actually had a lot of fun writing this fic and I got to be really nerdy about pirates! I spent a lot of time thinking about it and how to do it and what would work. It’s Prince!Dean, Pirate!Cas, kidnapping, pirate battles, adventure, stargazing, and a smidge of political/monarchical stuff. I don’t want to give too much away because I actually like the way it evolved but I think if you like aus that are less “romance” and more “falling in love and oh, shit, we’ve got a problem” I think you’ll like it. I know I did. (And the ending is cheesy.)

My favorite fic by someone else? Absolute favorite?

Dean’s got enough neurotic shit goin’ on in this fic to last me a life time, but what really sold me was chapter four. Like, holy shit. Dean gives this whole long, rambling explanation about parallels and it’s the funniest fuckin’ thing I’ve read in a long time. Also, shout out to Sam for being the most patient dude in the whole universe, and for the line “Do I get the bedroom eyes for not using my radio, too?” It’s such a good fic and it includes a lot of my favorite things, too. (Dean being anxious about all kinds of shit, Cas being a sassy and clever fucker, and Sam being a loving little brother but a little brother none the less.) It’s also got a neat monster!

“Cas, you know mermaids don’t exist, right?” Dean said, a smile playing on his lips and one arm resting along Castiel’s shoulders. Cas rambling on about odd subjects while they lay in bed together was not an unusual occurrence, but an endlessly amusing one for Dean.

Castiel frowned and turned his head to look at Dean.

“What makes you say that?”

“Well, I don’t know if you noticed, but I kind of come into contact with a lot creatures like that.” Dean shrugged his shoulders, gesturing at himself. “I think with all the hunters that have ever lived, one of us would have noticed if mermaids exist.”

“Not too long ago you would have said that angels didn’t exist.”

“Yeah, but -”

“And you do realize that you’re arguing with someone who has witnessed the creation of all of earth’s creatures since the beginning of time?”

“Um, I mean – I guess…”

“So, you can say with certainty – knowing that humans have only explored less than five percent of your world’s ocean – that there are absolutely no mermaids living there?”

Dean paused, snapping his mouth shut as he stared back at the angel, trying to read between the lines.

“Cas… are you implying that you know mermaids exist?”

Castiel’s amused smile faded into something more nonchalant as he sat up and stretched his arms above his head.

“I’m going to get a glass of water. Do you want anything?”

“Cas,” Dean leaned over to make a desperate grab at his arm to keep him in bed and missed, as Castiel had already stood up. “C’mon, Cas. Wait – are mermaids real??”

Castiel grinned and began putting on a robe, cinching it loosely around his waist.

The silence dragged on while Castiel walked over to the bedroom door, tugging it open and turning to glance over his shoulder agonizingly slowly.

“I’ll have to ask the Loch Ness Monster.”

The door shut behind him.

1/2 In canon, I think Dean would top when he and Cas first got together. Partially cuz he’s not ready to be that vulnerable, and partially cuz he’s excited to show Cas all about sex so he wants to take the lead. Then, as he and Cas got to really trust each other physically, he would want to bottom because Dean LOVES to be taken care of. And he doesn’t like to admit it, but he really likes to not be in control because he’s so very tired of worrying about being in control of everything.

2/2 For once, he just wants to be vulnerable and let someone else take the reins. Cas on the other hand has constantly been out of control, particularly when it comes to Dean’s safety. So Can generally likes to top, because he loves to have control in this one aspect of his life – to have control of Dean’s pleasure and be able to take care of him. That’s my headcanon anyway ✌

I can see it. And I can see Dean being super freaking attentive when he tops for Cas because how could he not be, right? Like, I just think Dean’s a really giving lover and giving his partner pleasure gives him pleasure. So having Cas underneath him, a little blown away by all the new sensations would be just as fun for Dean as it is for Cas. And of course, Dean would be just as attentive to Dean when the tables are turned. 

I just like the idea of give and take with these two. Like, they really enjoy getting lost in each other and providing each other with what they need, whatever that may be. 

I’d love to talk about my kinks but they’re like NOT encouraged in any way… I wish I was just into BDSM or whatever.. though I do like breath play *coughs*. Anyway, what are YOUR favourite headcanons for Destiel?

Breath play can be fun, esp with Dean and Cas. I’ve read several fun destiel breath play fics. mmmm. 

My favorites are totally dependant on what version of these characters we’re talkin’ about. Like, if it’s angel!Cas I have a huge thing about Dean tugging on Cas’s wings and having it drive him absolutely crazy. Also, Cas glowing and causing lights to shatter in whatever room they’re in when he comes. Or like, Dean realizing partway through that he’s essentially having sex with a being that’s more force of nature than human and kind of getting off on the idea that Castiel could literally do anything to him (maybe a bit of fear kink in there). 

If we’re talking human!Cas I love the idea of their sex life starting out really timid. Like, every act is desperate in a way because they’re both overwhelmed and excited and happy but they can’t get their hands to stop shaking and they have to go slow or they’re going to wind up frantic and it’s all gonna be over way too fast. Obviously, as they get used to each other they mellow out, but I can see the first time or two being timid in a way. (But I’m a sucker for that kind of shit so that’s just me.) 

Also, I like the idea that they’re kind of exhibitionists. Like, maybe the first time it’s right after a hunt and the adrenaline is racing so they just kinda… screw in a graveyard. And then Dean makes some comment about them being the envy of every Byronic teenage boy and Cas is like “do what now?” because Dean’s definitely going to admit to that super brief time when he was fifteen and thought it might be cool impress goth girls and so he read a lot of Romantic literature and wore eyeliner that one time. (But that’s a headcanon for another day. Anyway…) But Cas kinda likes the risk and Dean’s got a bit of a thrill seeking streak in him so they wind up trying to tease each other and get each other off in places they really shouldn’t be having sex.
