I definitely know that, haha. and oh yeah!! I remember that idea. It’s dcj so I think you’ve got a fairly good chance at making progress or even finishing it before you go to sleep. Your sleep schedule tends to be like mine, sooooo ;D

lol. Well, I hope so. I’d like to be in bed before 2 am so I’ve got about 2 hrs I think. But then again… I don’t actually sleep so who knows. Technically I could post at seven in the morning and it would be before I “go to bed”

I mean. It’s a ficlet. In order to keep it short I don’t think it *can* have much of a plot. 😛 what is it that you’re writing?

Okay, but you’ve met me so you know short isn’t in my vocabulary. lol
It’s for the polybingo. DCJ in which Dean introduced Sam to his partners. Includes drag queen!Jimmy and gender fluid!Cas.

I had to trash over 700 words and now I am sad.

In a lot of ways it’s good because all the stuff I cut can be reworked and put in other places, it was just really front loaded w/world building. So that’s good.

But I think I need to change POV of the peice. It’s supposed to be an easy, shotgunning, endverse foursome but angst keeps getting in the way and Dean’s being an asshole. So. Ugh.

@samanddeaninpanties
He’s jealous. 😉 He’s not trying to be a dick he just is.
I’m gonna have to switch. The tone’s jacked up and I was it to be melancholy. He’s too… I dunno? Too bitter maybe? Oh well. I have three other characters here. One of them has to be the right one, right?

Wild thought (I have those at stupid o’clock in the morning) but fic writers who commission fics for like $5 per 1k words are waaaaay under charging. That’s half a cent per word. That’s not even close to the semi-pro rate for writing in most places.

There was a post going around a while back about the old habit (more or less defunct now, at least on Ao3) of putting massive disclaimers ahead of your fic that you weren’t trying to make money off anyone else’s copyrighted stuff, you were just writing for fun, please don’t sue. All I’m saying is if Anne Rice’s lawyers ever got wind of people writing fic for commission they would be on that shit like flies on velcro.

That’s not to say I don’t agree with you: artists should be paid fairly for their work no matter what they create and that pretty much never happens. (Musicians playing gigs for “exposure” is another good example. And don’t get me started on trying to make money off knitting.) I’m just glad that the world has come far enough that we can even have this discussion with regards to fan works.

Oh yeah. I have heard of the Anne Rice (and other authors) thing. Messy to say the least.

I definitely get the legal issues with anyone selling or making money off unofficial fan products, but I personally feel that if fan artists can make money and people who create unlicensed merchandise are “okay” within fandom, fan writers ought to be, too. Realistically, it’s all dubious to say the least. None of own the names or rights to these characters and we are all subject to the whims of the copyright holders. It’s just odd to me that buying a print from a fan artist or a necklace or a phone case is cool but commissioning fan fic is somehow “more illegal”. It’s not, but fandom seems to think so.

And perhaps it’s because copyright holders haven’t gone after fan artists they way they have fan writers? Who knows. I’m just glad the tides are turning honestly.

@unforth-ninawaters
Replying to all via one screen shot doober.

Yeah. I mean, I was mostly going off myself there. I’ve done 150k so far this year. And its fricken July. I could potentially get to 300k this year and it’s more than I’ve written in a long time. More than I’ve written since I told pro writting to shove it, anyway.

But yeah, I mean, if you took a random work from anyone who writes AUs and changed the names how easily could you tell they were supposed to be Cas or Dean or Sam or whoever? We might be able to, but could the general public? Probably not. They feel like Dean or Cas or Sam because we know how we interpret those characters from screen to text but honestly? They’re archetypes. Fleshed out archetypes with personalities and flaws and all but there are characters like Sam and Dean and Cas in everything, they just have different quirks and speech patterns and histories. We see the characters in an AU as spn characters because we’re told to by the author. I was talking to @samanddeaninpanties the other day about how easy it would be for me to switch names around in a recent fic and turn into into a different ship fic. If I changed the names completely and a few details, it would totally be an original fic. It would be easy.

And after all, how many fan authors have taken down fics to turn them into original work?

I dunno, I just get so frustrated. Fan artists can make money off their art and that’s acceptable but fan writers somehow shouldn’t. We work hard, too. If I want to set up a donation site or charge one cent per word for a commission, I’m going to. I’m really glad the tides are changing, too, because it’s always seemed so unfair to me that writers “shouldn’t” make money off their work. Yeah, I barely edit my stuff, so that’s probably a mark against it’s quality but I still put work into it. And hell, if I am getting paid I’ll put more work into fixing it but as it is I’m not so I don’t care as much.

I dunno. I just know fan fuc writers are some of the most dedicated writers I’ve ever met. What we do is hard and it’s just as meaningful and artistic as anything else.

@mijrake
If I sat down and was really motivated, I could do thar in 3 hrs tops. I know professional writers who only write for 4 hrs a day. When they edit, they only edit for 4 hrs a day. Now, granted, none of these people are millionaires and most of them are married so their spouses bring home enough that they don’t have to worry about making a massive amount. (Most pro authors don’t make a whole lot, honestly.) Still, this is their career. The most productive writer I know publishes one book a year. A book that’s between 80 and 90k. I know fan fic writers who double that in a year. I know writers who write 3 or 4 hours a day.

Like, okay, fan fic isn’t professional writing. It doesn’t go through the same editing process or publication and these aren’t our characters. Still, if we decide to charge for a fic via commission, I don’t see why we charge so little for it. We don’t need to make Stephen King money (though it would be nice) but we should give ourselves a little more credit than we do now, imo.
