What’s it called when you’re writing a fic that’s kinda sorta canon verse but not? Like, (and no, this isn’t what I’m doing) if Dean were still a hunter but Sam was a weremoose and Charlie was a witch? Is that canon divergent or is there a specific category for that?

I think canon divergence is when everything is the same until something happens differently, I’d define your situation as “everything is the same but Sam is a weremoose and Charlie is a with” or just put in “weremoose!Sam” and “witch!Charlie”

But what if it’s like, Dean’s a hunter but he doesn’t have a brother named Sam and Sam is a weremoose? Does that still count as canon divergent?

I still get so confused about how to tag shit like this. I have no idea, dude. I need a much better breakdown of the canon-variation tags. Sorry I couldn’t help. If you happen upon a clear explanation, I’d love to hear.

No worries! It’d be nice to have clearer tags though, you’re right. Because it’s not *really* canon divergent if it’s set up completely different but it’s also not like Urban Fantasy b/c hunters and stuff.
Idk. I might just go with Alternate Universe – Fantasy on Ao3. That should cover it I guess.
(whenever I actually get to that stage, of course)

… do you get hassled because you do? That’s ridiculous :-/ headcanons can literally be anything.

I personally have never had anyone come to my askbox and tell me that my headcanons for aro!Dean are bad or wrong or dumb but I have seen a few people who headcanon ace!Dean get told to they shouldn’t. I’ve also seen a few bloggers either imply or outright state that interpreting Dean as aro or ace or gay or literally anything other than straight or bi is wrong for one reason or another. I guess they all missed the memo about fandom being transformative and headcanons being literally anything you wanted them to be. (Or that personal interpretation and re-contextualization is common and literally the reason we have AUs.) (And, of course, Dean is just an example here. I’ve seen a bit of this nonsense with other characters as well.)

So, I haven’t been hassled (which I’m surprised by considering how vocal I am at times about my own headcanons) but I see it enough to make me mad. But yeah, it’s super ridiculous.

Semi-related: When I told my bf how a co-worker told her husband that she was pregnant (positive test in a little necklace box), my bf said that she should have gotten him a “dad” mug. You bet your butt that when I found out I was pregnant a few years later, I rushed out and bought him a “Best Dad Ever” mug.

Hahaha! That’s amazing and super cute! I love little things like that.
