I have a request for you. Can you please reply to this post with your thoughts on exactly what Castiel stands for in Supernatural. What his core story has all been about? (I’m not looking for shipping answers on this one – I know, I know, its easy to respond with DEAN and yes, I agree that Dean is a HUGE part of his development, but I am looking for a more general answer).
What is Castiel’s fundamental purpose and what does he stand for on this show? What do you believe he symbolises as a character?
For example, a character like Frodo Baggins symbolises how ‘even the smallest person can change the fate of the world’.
Buffy Summers would be ‘the stereotypical blonde damsel in distress can be the kick ass hero and save the world’ (she was all about subverting gender stereotyping when she was originally created).
I know that the overall message of this show is about family and how it ‘doesn’t end with blood’, but I am looking particularly about what you associate Castiel with from a symbolic perspective and what his core values are throughout his time on the show.
Your answers will be extremely helpful to me and prove important research in something I am attempting to write.
Many thanks and much love.

To me, Castiel has always been about faith, choice, and the search for something worth believing in. Supernatural is, in many ways, a humanist story, where gods and destiny and traditional models of faith no longer matter because god is feckless and the only one who’s going to save us is ourselves. Cas, being a faithless angel is interesting because he wants to fight for something but he forgets that he needs to believe in himself. He flounders not because he’s searching for something to believe in or because he’s incapable of doing good, he flounders because he tries to take everything on to jimself and doesn’t believe himself enough. I really feel that Cas represents a person’s search for faith, not just in something but also in themself (and I think his story can only come to a satisfying conclusion if he learns that he has value in himselffor just existing and not for what he can do.)
Where did the Chrysler Building comparison come from anyway? Does Cas inherently know all measurments on Earth and beyond or did he stand next to it once to see who’ s taller
OMG, this made me snort-laugh so hard!
Now I’m imagining this badass many-faced creature with giant inhuman limbs next to a sky-skraper, biting on his tongue, while using his very strangely proportioned hand to measure who’s taller
Can someone with drawing skills please please please give us this image!
