Convos like this remind me how fricken lucky I am. I watched Xena with my mom and we both assumed Gabby and Xena were a couple. We both got pissed whenever forced heteronormative romance was shoved toward either character…

My mom has been getting a little bit better, so that’s good at least. I think a lot of it had to do with my cousin coming out as a lesbian and marrying a bi lady. She’s not nearly as bad as my grandmother who keeps wondering “why they have to make everything gay” or “why everyone keeps changing genders”. Which, in those situations, I’m glad my mom is around because she says things like “because people are gay/trans, mom”.
Of course, when they announce a reboot of Xena and said the two would be lovers my mom didn’t understand why they had to make two “best friends” lovers. Explaining it all to her is an exercise in patience.
It’s just funny, sometimes, watching things with my mom because while it doesn’t bother her she just doesn’t see things the way I do. And it’s frustrating because she’s not incapable of seeing other subtle character things in television, she just has this one blind spot.
Dad is less understanding but it’s fun to watch him squirm when I put LOGO on so I ignore it and get my kicks where I can.
