Trump retweeted a 16-year-old Grand Theft Auto youtuber and this furthers my belief that gamergate was a precursor to Trumpism.
More specifically it was about the radicalization of young white men, which is both a cultural and security issue that goes largely unaddressed. Gamergate was Baby’s First Reactionary Movement. You take a group of boys, tell the, the world owes them everything, and watch what happens when they don’t get it. They’ll look to anyone who will point to a group to blame. It’s pretty much the same formula whether it’s gamers, coal miners, or white-collar dickheads who are positive their black boss got the job through affirmative action. It all boils down to this cultural resentment of a privileged group realizing that their privileges are very slowly eroding. It is in no way an accident that gamergate’s biggest heroes, namely Milo Yiannopolis and Mike Cernovich, are Trump’s most enthusiastic boosters online.
